Now that I've actually read the article it's amazing how closely this conforms to what my father has always told me the real difference is between liberals and conservatives.
According to him, liberals believe that we're headed toward a more prefect world, or in the religious parlance he spoke in, that we're headed toward a more perfect union with God. Conservatives, on the other hand, believe that we once had that perfect union, and we've been slipping further from it with every decision the species/country has made since jump.
Perhaps the dichotomy that their refering to as whiny vs. confidant would be better expressed as pessimistic vs. optimistic.
Either way, you're still riding the fence like a pro.
